Dan’s Story

Dan was born and raised in the Chicago suburbs, and lived in seven states and on both sides of the Pacific Ocean before finding Howard County. His professional career has spanned the public, private, and nonprofit sectors, from managing operations in organizations supporting the Chicago Public School district to leading management consulting teams in tackling federal agencies' tough problems using strategic planning and performance management. Along the way, Dan met Laura. Today they have two children in Howard County Public Schools.

Dan is driven by a passion for public service. He currently serves on boards and committees for many local community organizations including:

Dan’s Journey to Howard County

 

Growing up in the Chicago suburbs


Dan was born and raised in Evanston, Illinois. A proud product of public schools, he attended Dawes Elementary School, Chute Middle School, and Evanston Township High School.

U.S. Naval Academy


Dan experienced his first Maryland summer upon arriving in Annapolis for Plebe Summer. He graduated in 1996 with a B.S. in history and was commissioned as an ensign in the United States Navy.

The Navy


Dan served on active duty for seven years as a surface warfare officer. He was stationed on warships based in Everett, Washington, and Yokosuka, Japan, was an admiral’s aide-de-camp, and worked in the Navy’s budget requirements office in the Pentagon.

Harvard University


Dan then moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he earned a Master in Public Policy degree from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. While a graduate student, Dan was awarded a Public Policy Summer Fellowship by the Rappaport Institute for Greater Boston. He worked as a fellow in City Hall in neighboring Somerville, Massachusetts, where he successfully launched SomerStat, Somerville’s performance management department, the first of its kind in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Nonprofit Sector Management in Chicago


After finishing graduate school, Dan returned to Chicago where he worked in the nonprofit sector, in organizations that supported the Chicago Public School system.

Consulting in Northern Virginia and Huntsville, Alabama


Dan and Laura returned to the DC area, where Dan worked as a management consultant specializing in strategic planning, organization design, and performance management. His clients were C-suite level executives and their flag officer counterparts in federal agencies and military commands including Army Materiel Command, the Department of Homeland Security’s Under Secretary for Management, and the Department of State’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security.

🎉 In April, 2010, Dan and Laura’s first child (currently a rising 7th grader at Harper’s Choice Middle School) was born. 🎉

🎉 In October, 2012, the family welcomed their second child. She is now a rising 4th grader at Swansfield Elementary School. 🎉

Home in Howard County


The Newberger family moved to Columbia in 2013. Dan transitioned from consulting to the public sector, working for the chief information officer at Social Security Administration headquarters, before eventually returning to the private sector where he currently works in management for a Fortune 100 technology company.
